Character Inspiration
Last week, I shared a table of characters to be created. Here is a smaller version of that table focusing on this week’s rolls and associated values:
Week | D10 | Species | D12 | Class |
0 | 7 | Halfling | 9 | Rogue |
For the halfling rogue, I went to heroforge.com to make a miniature as a reference. Also, collected some references from Pinterest. Below are the references that I gathered:
Drawing Process
This theme requires a focus on anatomy and face construction. I struggled with proportions. Going forward, I will devote some time to various body parts to improve their construction.
The first drawing has quite a big head compared with the rest of the body. It feels more like a small person. The second picture doesn’t really feel like a small person. The body feels quite large compared to the head. The left leg is bigger than the left leg. Those two drawings were based on mini designed on HeroForge. The last drawing was based off of Pinterest references. I think it turned out well. So I decided to ink and color it.
Final Character Designs
Here is the final inked version.
Here is the color version.
For the coloring, I experimented with the cel-shading technique. I think the coloring turned out okay for the first try. I should have used the shadow and light colors more sparingly to suggest more depth.
Valmo’s Backstory
Valmo Nightsurge was born in the slums of a metropolis, the poorest portion of the bustling metropolis. In this area, there were no rules, no law enforcement. People were out for themselves. At the age of 10, he woke up to an empty room, with only a trick coin left behind. He never learned whether they fled or fell victim to the slums. Left to fend for himself. He found work in the slums. But due to his halfling stature, his earnings were stolen from him. He learned an important lesson this day. Steal or be stolen from. He began to notice his surroundings more, notice people’s body language. Became adept with a lockpick and skilled with a dagger. He stole money, food, even lives when necessary. His paranoia led to him being skilled at marking targets. He gained renown in the slum. He was recruited by the right hand man of the Lord of the Thieve’s Guild, Marko. He joined the thieve’s guild in order to gain enough wealth to finally escape the slums. He takes on a quest to infiltrate an adventuring party on a quest to take down an evil wizard. The quest presented an opportunity to gain unique treasures that he will be able to sell even after the guild takes the most valuable. Or he could defect and earn enough coin to make it out of the slums. What will he choose?
